  1. For the 99

From the recording For The 99

I wrote this song after visiting Occupy Wall Street in Zucotti Park in NYC 33 hours before it was dismantled in the middle of the night. No ruler, no tyrant, can destroy or dismantle what lives in our hearts.

Lyrics

We are gathered here in the people’s square
So we can have our say
We have come today to protest the way
Our rulers have behaved

Time is growing late we cannot hesitate
Our Mother Earth must be saved
All together here somehow we’ve lost our fear
Surely it must be fate

That we are longing for freedom
Never feeling more alive
In our hearts we hold the future
We declare we are here
For the 99

Now we are resigned bodies on the line
Our strength in common and in kind
No corporate dark design
Can quell or undermine
The fire that burns inside

And we are longing for freedom
Never feeling more alive
In our hearts we hold the future
We declare we are here
For the 99

We are gathered here
In the people’s square
Truth our voices magnify
No corporate dark design
No tyrant’s clever lies
Can stop our rise

In honor of Dr. King's Birthday Celebration at a church on Jerusalem Road . . . Sharleen Leahey sings "The Ballad of Martin Luther King" for a Baptist church congregation in Scotch Plains, New Jersey on January 27, 2011. The audience enthusiastically sings the chorus:

"I've been to the mountaintop . . .

Today I have a dream . . .

Let us never forget the words . . .

Let us never forget the deeds . . .

Let us never forget the dream of Martin Luther King"
