  1. The Defenders

I wrote this song a few weeks after the 'selection' in November 2016 while visiting my family in Australia . . .

We defied Nixon . . .
We survived Reagan . . .
We made our way through the Bushes . . .
We shall overcome

Lyrics

Angry workers
Times are tough
Wages stagnant not enough
The pretender promised
With Hollywood flair
Said “I’m your defender”
Soothed their despair
Somehow he made it through
Our rejection

Electors were gathered
Some felt misused
Our protests were scattered
Millions confused
The pretender threatened
From his skyscraper lair
With few defenders
We fought back despair
But somehow we gotta make it through
Their selection

Goldman Sachs sackin’
Still pullin’ strings
Casino hijackin’
Right in the West Wing
The pretender deals from his oval office lair
With few defenders we fight back despair
But somehow we gotta make it through
His deception

Angry workers
Times are tough
Wages still stagnant not enough
The pretender feeds on injustice and despair
Dividing with hatred dividing with fear
But divided we’ll never make it through
We need connection

So rise up dreamers
Daughters and sons
Earth protectors
We are the ones
When the pretender lies
Speak your truth
Loud and clear
’Cause we’re the defenders
No time for despair
United our love
Will bring us through
United our love
Will bring us closer too
United our love
Will bring us through

In honor of Dr. King's Birthday Celebration at a church on Jerusalem Road . . . Sharleen Leahey sings "The Ballad of Martin Luther King" for a Baptist church congregation in Scotch Plains, New Jersey on January 27, 2011. The audience enthusiastically sings the chorus:

"I've been to the mountaintop . . .

Today I have a dream . . .

Let us never forget the words . . .

Let us never forget the deeds . . .

Let us never forget the dream of Martin Luther King"
